When I suddenly lost my husband at the tender age of 32, due to a road accident, the real meaning of “insurance” dawned on me! His insurance money came in handy to tide us over, paid for the kids schooling and cushioned our shattered world. It was soon after, that I decided to take up Insurance as a home based business and became an Insurance agent. It offers a great amount of freedom, and women make good insurance advisors. It is a respectable job and an Insurance agent is well-respected. Having learnt the hard way, I am happy to share my learning curve with other women who may want to pursue this as a career.

How many people can boast of a career where they are in control of their future? A career in Insurance gives you just that- a control over the future! Today the choices are many, several Insurance companies are happy to recruit women, and train them for free. Thereafter, the agent is paid a commission on all business she brings in. Targets are set and the company constantly provides motivation and guidance.

If you have made up your mind about becoming an Insurance agent, the first thing you should do is list out all the major Insurance companies in the country. Then do your homework and study each company profile, their products etc. Approach the company you think you would like to be associated with. You will need to undergo a short training, and after that you are your own boss!

There are different types of Insurances: health, life, accident, household, property, fire etc. Choose which one you would like to sell. Today there are many companies offering ULIP ( unit linked insurance plans) and you will need to study these carefully before you sell them to others.

What you need to know & do…

An Insurance agent is a person who is employed directly by the Insurance company.

You need to check the rules of the company, whether you can sell only their products, or sell products of other companies too.
You may have to spend time on mandatory training programmes and meetings
You will need to familiarize yourself with the products and the fine print
Do your homework. Remember people will look up to you as an expert.
Fine tune your selling skills
The initial years are the hardest, when you are trying to break into the business. It gets easier with time.
Being thoroughly professional pays off. Fix appointments before meeting clients, be punctual, follow up with clients, send them reminders for premium payments, try to sell them new products.
Income may not be consistent initially, but as you build your business, it will even out.
To sum it up, all I can say is, even though Insurance offers freedom, flexible timings and personal space, selling it is hard work!
