A few years ago, jewellery design was very traditional, and the exclusive domain of goldsmiths and renowned jewellers. But today the scenario has changed. People are looking for innovation even in jewellery. New designs, unusual and creative patterns are in high demand. Today's mantra is exclusivity and contemporary designs are popular. Disposable incomes have gone up and people are very willing to spend, if they can make a fashion statement.
What you will need.

A passion for the profession

You should be artistic, imaginative and creative. You should also be capable of sketching and drawing. You will need to translate your designs on paper.

Consider being an apprentice to a jeweller / goldsmith and learn the art. This will train your eye to know which gemstones can be combined for best effect, what "setting" gemstones entails etc.

You can take up a Diploma course in jewellery design to learn the finer nuances of the trade. The minimum qualification for this course is XIIth. Std. This will give you a stable foundation in the types of stones, metals used, costing, presentation, design etc.

You will also be trained to design different types of jewellery:

contemporary jewellery etc.
What "designing" entails.

You will need to conceptualize jewellery designs

Prepare sketches ( either draw them out or design on the computer)

You may need to modify the design based on customer needs if you are customizing jewellery

If you are creating your own designs, you may need to

support them with structural designs or samples.

You can use CAD / CAM programmes to design jewellery on the computer.

You will need to calculate weight, size etc accurately.

You can tie up with a renowned jeweller and design for him on a regular basis.

You can work out of home, or for a jeweler as a freelancer. You could also tie up with jewellery export companies or international fashion houses.

As a trainee you may start at about 10000, but as you gain experience, the sky is the limit!
